Vata Dosha – Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy

For ayurvedic therapy to be effective, one must understand the nature of the Vata constitution.

Here is a simplified understanding – some charateristics and qualities of Vata dosha.

Vata represents the air and ether elements.

Vata people usually have tall or thin body frames with less body strength and endurance.

They often have low body weight with their muscles being less dense, hence their long and lanky body structures.

Vata people generally have lower immune systems and therefore have less resistance to disease.

The main qualities of Vata are dry, light, cool, rough, subtle and mobile.

So a person being predominant  vata dosha means that these qualities express themselves greatly in their mental, emotional and physical make up.

In excess, the dry and rough qualities may manifest themselves as dry, brittle and rough skin, lips, hair, nails or bones. They become prone to constipation and can feel “dry” emotionally.

The “light” quality can manifest as underweight, poor muscle development and light brittle bones. Insomnia or feeling “spacey” can result from too much lightness.

The cold quality of Vata may lead one to feel cold more easily and regularly compared to others. It often resulst in cold extremities leading them to crave more warmth.

The subtle quality may lead one to become more introverted and more creative.

The mobile quality may lead to a healthy ability to “multi-task” but may cause scattered attention, fidgety tendencies, tremors, dizziness and nervousness in excess.

Vata people need to be treated with care and consideration because they have a fragile mind and body.

Negative effects: Vata people often become nervous and pose a sensitive temperament. They often have difficulty performing tasks steadily and continuously. The may give up on projects, become distracted and give up or fail at their goals.

Positive effects: Vata people are blessed with a lot of creativity and enthusiasm. If they ground themselves and direct their energy properly, they can make great achievements and accomplishments in life. They have abstract and intelligent minds.

Careers: Vata people require jobs with less strenuous physical activity and where their concentration or attention is not consistently required. They do well at creative and communication work, where they can perform a variety of tasks.
