I have learned a lot about my health and ayurveda in the last 20 years. Through my learning experience as an ayurvedic practitioner I have learned how to adopt healthy ayurveda lifestyle activities to balance my agni and support my mental, emotional and physical well-being.
Years ago, when I suffered from many health conditions, I used ayurveda to transform my illness and suffering into a positive experience of health and healing. This is also something I explore and share with my students and clients regularly.
One thing I discovered in ayurveda that played a significant role in my healing was the principle of agni. Agni is a Sanskrit word that represents the process of digestion and transformation. It includes the acid and enzymes in the stomach and small intestine as well as the subtle body energy (prana) needed for digestion and transformation.
Your agni indicates the strength of your digestive fire and the metabolic processes that operate in your gut and digestive organs. Therefore, if your agni is strong, you have a strong digestive fire and your ingested food can easily be absorbed and assimilated. However, if your agni is weak, you have a weak digestive fire and lack the ability to absorb and assimilate the nutrients from your food.
Because agni is the force that converts food into energy, it is responsible for all the vital functions of your body. Therefore, ayurveda considers a balanced agni essential for a long, happy and healthy life.
If your agni is vitiated or becomes impaired, your whole metabolism in the body will be disturbed, resulting in ill health and disease. Therefore, it is important to understand and look at your agni to make sure it is balanced. So how do we do this?
There are several ways. Here are 5 lessons that I have learned and teach as certified ayurvedic yoga therapist and ayurvedic practitioner.
Lesson 1: How to create a healthy and sustainable yoga practice that promotes purification for both the body and mind: Certain yoga postures can balance agni to enhance health and longevity.
Lesson 2: How to integrate yoga & ayurveda wellness practices that are essential for restoring agni and creating an environment for health & healing.
Lesson 3: How Panchakarma treatments can be practiced for eliminating toxins from the system to rebalance the doshas, heal the digestive system, enhance immunity and increase the anti-aging factor.
Lesson 4: How the 5 elements can be used to revitalize your bodily systems: Learning the practical uses of earth, water, fire, air, and space to enhance mind-body health.
Lesson 5: How to understand and apply ayurvedic psychology for health and well-being: Embracing the laws of nature and the gunas for awakening creativity and establishing the power of balance, light and intelligence for focus, energy and enthusiasm.
