Moving From Darkness To Light – A Personal Story Of Ayurveda & Life

This was the beginning of my journey into Ayurveda for health and healing.  I read everything I could find about Ayurveda and dove deep into the vast and wonderful ocean of this knowledge.  I traveled across the globe to study  with various Ayurvedic teachers, doctors and practitioners.

Here is a personal story of Ayurveda I would like to share. Prior to my studies with the California College of Ayurveda and my time spent in Kerala, India learning Ayurvedic Health Practices from doctors and practitioners, I was very unhealthy.

In fact, it all began when I was 26 years old. I woke up one morning crying because my face and hands were swollen, full of rashes and sore.  I had no idea what was wrong.  I went to my doctor, who referred me to a rheumatologist, who then referred me to a dermatologist, who also suggested I see another specialist…you get the picture.
Despite several attempts of treatments and medications, no one could figure out what was wrong with me and my condition wasn’t improving. Then a friend of mine who I completed my Yoga teacher Training with suggested I look into Ayurveda.  What the heck was Ayurveda?  I had never heard of it but trusting my friend, I decided to read a book by a prominent Ayurvedic doctor he suggested. I was amazed and couldn’t put the book down.

Upon extensive research, and additional reading I began to change what I ate, made some herbal remedies, applied special oil on my skin and made significant lifestyle changes which included specific exercises both for my body and mind.  Within a few weeks, my hands and face looked normal,  the swelling and pain had subsided and the rashes were gone.

This was the beginning of my journey into Ayurveda for health and healing.  I read everything I could find about Ayurveda and dove deep into the vast and wonderful ocean of this knowledge.  I traveled across the globe to study  with various Ayurvedic teachers, doctors and practitioners. I came back to my home here in Alberta living in various locations such as Calgary, Edmonton and Banff. Edmonton is now my home where I continue to practice and teach this wonderful art and science.

What I have learned is Ayurveda works on many levels. In addition to healing myself, it has helped tremendously for students and clients. I have witnessed it make an amazing difference in so many lives.  It takes some commitment and discipline as well as a willingness to learn and change. I also understand that habits and routines can feel difficult to change.

Like Plato’s allegory of the cave, we get used to one reality and it can be difficult to see another.  But to all of you out there who have suffered with your health, you have a choice.  When you are ready, you can use Ayurveda (with Yoga) as a tool and way of life to shine light on your habits, your routines, your relationships and your existence.
If you are healthy, you can learn how to preserve and nourish your well-being. If you are suffering or sick, you can learn how to regain your joy, vitality and strength.  You can make a choice to turn away from the cave wall and even journey out of the cave. You can start with a candle and end up in the light of the sun. It is possible. It is magnificent.  It is a gift.  If and when you are ready, I would love to guide you on your own path to health, wellness and wholeness. Let’s move out of the darkness and into the light. One small step at a time.
