In our online ayurvedic nutrition course, we teach that a healthy & balanced diet needs to incorporate the six using specific herbs, foods and spices.
In addition to including the right amount of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, the six tastes naturally and organically guide us towards our body’s nutritional needs.
Each taste feeds our mind, body and senses in a unique way.
In an ayurvedic nutrition course, one should learn about a healthy diet perspective according to ayurveda principles. The six tastes of ayurveda play an important role in this.
Sweet foods, for example, are extremely rich in fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and water, whereas salty, bitter and astringent foods are high in vitamins and/or minerals.
Sour foods can also provide the body with vitamins and pungent foods have healing qualities – they are often anti-fungal and anti-viral and anti-bacterial in nature.
Throughout the day, your brain sends your body signals when it requires energy in the form of food.
By incorporating all six tastes into each meal, you can ensure that the right signals are sent when they are needed, resulting in optimal health.
Without the right signals your body gets confused which can result in food cravings and over-consumption of certain foods.
Therefore it is important to have all six tastes in your meals creating the right balance of healthy nutrients to be absorbed by your body.
Including the six tastes in each meal doesn’t need to be a challenging task.
Adding a squeeze of lime or lemon to cooked dishes, for example, can quickly satisfy the sour taste.
Adding some ginger to a meal will satisfy the pungent taste while adding a side salad will fulfill the Bitter and Astringent tastes.
So, prepare and cook your meals using the various foods, herbs and spice that have all six tastes.
