It has been over a decade now since I have been incorporating healing therapies for Ayurveda & anxiety, stress and depression into our Yoga Teacher Training, Courses and Retreats.
The question that I often reflect on is “how has this ancient science of health and longevity influenced the thousands of people I have been privileged to inspire and teach”.
One of the answers to this question has been evident in the feedback and results that we have received from our students and the participants taking part in our Yoga & Ayurveda programs.
What they have revealed, is that much of their suffering is a result of the symptoms and conditions associated with Anxiety, Stress, Depression, Trauma or a combination of both. And, Ayurveda has helped to significantly reduce their symptoms & conditions.
The latest research shows that in North America alone, 1 out of every 3 people claim they have a significant amount of stress or anxiety that effects their physical, emotional & mental well-being.
“More and more people are finding it difficult to deal with their stress, anxiety and depression causing them to take time off work, visiting hospitals more frequently and resorting to more drugs and pharmaceuticals which can have moderate to severe side effects and over time can lead to other conditions and disease”.
So the big question is “How can Ayurveda help with Anxiety, Stress & Depression”?
Due to my own past health issues and conditions I have personally healed and transformed my life by embracing and practicing both Yoga & especially Ayurveda.
Since I was a young boy, I have suffered from many conditions related to the lungs and digestive system. I had bad allergies, chronic colds and severe skin conditions. Later in my teens and twenties I suffered from chronic stress and anxiety.
These symptoms persisted for many years and it wasn’t until I began learning and applying Ayurveda and certain Yoga techniques that these conditions started to go away and I started living with more freedom, doing the things I enjoyed without the chronic stress and anxiety.
Three Important things I integrated into my lifestyle to improve my mental health were:
1. The use of certain herbs that are used in Ayurveda to treat mental health conditions and improve physical, emotional and mental well-being. Some of these herbs are more common such as Bacopa or Gotu Kola. Some are less heard but have specific roles in the treatment of chronic stress, anxiety and depression. I go over these specific herbs and supplements in detail in my Yoga & Ayurveda for Anxiety, Stress & depression Online Course
2. The knowledge of “The Inflammation Model of Depression” form the western medicine view and how it relates to Ayurveda. This included exploring different types of foods and nutrition protocols that have been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years to reduce inflammation. Through research and clinical studies modern science is just now understanding what Ayurveda has been promoting for centuries. This information outlined in the yoga & Ayurveda online course can support conventional medicine and shut down inflammation that causes mental health conditions.
3. Discovering how to balance Agni and Soma (your solar and lunar energy) which can determine and affect your mental health and well-being. This is extremely important because there are certain lifestyle activities and exercises that create balance for your mind body connection. Yoga & breathing exercises are valuable but additional techniques and strategies enhances the process for balance and optimum health. I cover this in great detail in my ayurveda for mental health course.
More and more people are seeking out holistic approaches to deal with their stress, anxiety & depression and Ayurveda is a precious gift that can be taught and shared to enhance mental health and well-being. I believe it is needed more than ever now!
