In Ayurveda, healthy digestion is the cornerstone of health. The health of the digestive system is seen through the digestive fire (Agni). The state of our Agni is the greatest link to our strength and vitality. Therefore, what we eat and everything we take in through our 5 senses matters.
Many diseases and discomforts can be prevented and cured through maintaining and balancing the Agni. The digestive fire consumes our food and transforms it into the elements of the body, mind and emotions.
Some factors which weaken the Agni or create an imbalance are: overeating, drinking too fluids during and after meals, snacking throughout the day, eating at the wrong time, eating before the previous meal is digested, excess sleep, lack of exercise, anger, grief, frequent changes in dietary habits and misuse of our senses.
Signs of healthy Agni include: excellent digestion (no bloating of belching or gas), normal elimination, proper tissue formation, good circulation, high energy, strong immunity, good complexion, pleasant body odour and breath, intelligence, enthusiasm and perception. These are just a few things out of many that could be mentioned.
Signs of unhealthy Agni: digestion is inefficient and incomplete, gas and bloating, constipation, aches and pains, heartburn, acid reflux, diarrhea, inflammation, cough (without a cold), cravings for heavy and sweet food, anxiety and depression. I have just listed a few symptoms here however there are many.
To really live well and happy one should take good care of the Agni with proper nutrients and yoga practices. This week I am practicing specific yoga sequences and doing a kitchari cleanse with special herbs to balance the state of my Agni. I feel this is a great time as we move into the summer season.
Just remember when our Agni is balanced we thrive and when it is weak or unbalanced we suffer.
